3 Roadblocks to Recovery

What are the three most common roadblocks to overcoming a painful past?

After conducting over 100 regional weekend seminars on the aftermath of abortion, we discovered the following three factors were the most common hindrances to a person’s recovery.

Denial is the emotional blackout of one’s feelings and memories. Denial is a defense mechanism postulated by Sigmund Freud, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence.

Fear is a major debilitating factor in recovery clients. Fear of being found out. Fear of others knowing what I have done. Fear of the unknown feelings that may take over. Fear of going crazy. Fear of facing the pain again.
Fear can be widely classified into two types: external fear and internal fear.

External fear is caused by something outside or inside of you which you are strongly motivated to avoid, for example: fear of spiders.

Internal fear is something inside of you that you link a negative emotion, for example: fear developed out of low self esteem.

Fear is the enemy of recovery.

All of us face the reality that if we have believed a lie, we are operating in unbelief of the truth.

Denial can be shattered through a number of key exercises used in FREE ME TO LIVE. Object lessons that help you to face the past in a therapeutic way. Working through these exercises can help displace the denial so that you can clearly see your way through recovery.

Facing your fears helps overcome your fears. There’s an old story of the old lion that roars loudly. The way the story goes, when the lion roars, the victim turns to run away from the roar only to fall victim to the lions cubs waiting in the bushes. As you turn to run, they jump you from behind. The fact is that when you “run to the roar” you discover that lion is an old, arthritic, fat kitty-cat who can only roar loudly. Just like the “man behind the curtain in the “Wizard of OZ!” He seemed so big and threatening, until they went behind the curtain.

Washing your soul with the Word of God (The BIBLE) does wonder for erasing unbelief. FREE ME TO LIVE uses over 450 precepts and concepts taken from the Bible to help you establish a correct and right understanding of major issues surround recovery including the biggest: forgiveness and grieving of your losses.
